Monster Math is back with new worlds to explore and new challenges to face. There are more characters, updated graphics and new features to help your child improve their math skills! Players will be so involved trying to rescue Dextra from the grasps of the evil monsters, they won’t even realize that they are learning and refining their math skills!

Play begins by entering your child’s name and grade level. Your child uses their finger to guide their character, Maxx, over pieces of land to attack the evil monsters who are holding Dextra captive. To attack these monsters, they must solve the math problems on the screen that have the answer that shows at the top of the screen. For example, if the words “Equals two” appears at the top of the screen, then the player must look at all of the math problems on the screen and tap the ones that equal two. As they correctly choose each problem, they give Maxx ammunition to fire at the monsters and take their life bar down until they are defeated. However, the monsters are moving around the screen at the same time and if Maxx lands on the same spot that a monster hops onto, then Maxx’s life bar goes down. Play continues through levels and into new worlds until all of the monsters are defeated and Dextra is rescued.

Another nice feature of this app is the Parent/Teacher reporting tool. This provides you with updated progress information for your child. The report tells you what areas your child is excelling in and what areas they are struggling in. It also tells you what skills will be introduced to them in the future. I love that the app provides this information so that you know where attention needs to be focused to help them improve.

I had the opportunity to review the first version of this app several months ago, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the new version. I was not that impressed with the app the first time around but there have been notable improvements made in both the quality of the graphics and sound as well as in the play itself. The game plays more smoothly and it is much more enjoyable and less frustrating for the player. Overall, I think it is a fun way for kids to practice their math skills. The integration of the “monster fighting” part of the game is a great distraction from the fact that kids are simply practicing math facts. They will have so focused on getting more ammunition and defeating the monsters that they will not even realize how much their math skills are improving. One thing that kind of frustrated my son who played this app, was that if he took a few seconds to work out a problem, the monster would hop on him and take his life. For children who know the facts but aren’t very fast at calculating, that could be quite frustrating and cause them to not want to continue playing. In spite of that, I think this is a great app and a unique way to get your children to want to practice math!
